Model Agencies aren't
All Bad Agencies
Now that you're a model; what
next? For fashion models, it's pretty much a no
brain decision; you just simply have to take the
model agency route. For photographic modeling,
freelancing is probably the better choice; least
ways it is if you're a hardworking, committed
individual who's prepared to give it her
all.
For every top-notch model
agency, there are several only interested in
themselves; actually that should be money for
themselves and most of it; your money. They're
lying in wait behind every hedgerow; each with a
more plausible scam than the others; all of them
wanting your money; nothing more, nothing less.
They'll hold out their grubby little hands, maybe
even crack a smile as they grab your money, trample
all over your dreams, and will they lose any of
sleep over it? Like hell they will. They'll simply
laugh all the way to the offshore bank
account.
Model agencies, many of them
operated by former models, are not the dominant
force they once were; in fact if you believe some
pundits "model agencies are over" and besides, most
of them are only interested in fashion models
anyway. A good model agency won't beat about the
bush; if you've got what it takes, they'll tell
you; and if you haven't got it, they'll also tell
you. They've got the power to turn you into the
next big thing and it won't cost you anything to
find out whether they can or not. Pick the wrong
agency and it will cost you; a lot!
Legitimate model agencies
usually only charge a percentage of your earnings
20% - 25% which is fine if you're getting your fair
share of profitable assignments. With scam
agencies, you only get 100% grief, so if you're
going to join a model agency, begin by doing just
that; join a model agency and stay away from
model/promotion agencies. You could easily find
yourself subsidising the favoured models of the
agency by standing on some street corner in the
middle of winter handing out leaflets, whilst any
real model assignments are taken by the chosen
ones.
In the UK, model agencies are
not allowed to charge for representation, but does
it stop some of them? No! Therefore if an agency
tells you there is a joining/registration fee; it's
a scam agency.
Stay away agencies that mention
modeling courses, any type of training, modeling
schools, contests, conventions; apart from the
agency, who needs them. You can either model or you
can't. They're just another way of making money;
for the agencies.
Don't be fooled by any of the
portfolio scams either. Many agencies recommend
their own pet photographer for portfolio
photographs; some go as far as suggesting the
chances of succeeding will be improved by using the
'right photographer'. It's normally nothing more
than another scam. You shouldn't have to pay for
the photographs and besides, such photographs are
usually of a sub standard quality
anyway.
Premium rate phone numbers,
premium listings and premium memberships are other
nasty little scams being used by the rogue
agencies, and yet again it's the models who are
being ripped off. How do these scam agencies get
away with it? Because with promises of wealth and
fame, many girls are easily parted from their
money.
And the moral of the story
is? Don't think like the islander you are. You
think you got it, take it to a bigger
island.
